What makes a house a home?  As a born and raised Edmontonian, I have called Edmonton my home all my life, and no matter what side of the city I’ve lived on, I’ve never been more than an hour’s drive from my parents.  The uncles, aunts, and cousins I grew up with have all been within a half hour’s drive.  Or a really long bike ride as I discovered the one time I rode my bike from Callingwood to Londonderry more than 20 years ago.  

I’ve never experienced living away from “home”. 

My husband, Chris, is from Newfoundland.  Although he has lived here almost his entire adult life, I’m sure a part of him calls NL home and I know, especially through the pandemic, he misses his family terribly. When we got married, I never imagined how hard it would be

Where do buyers form the most lasting impression of a home for sale that they visit? On the main floor!

When buyers view a property, they often spend a lot of time on the main floor, thinking and imagining. They visualize cooking in the kitchen, having family dinners in the dining room, and entertaining guests in the living room. They even mentally calculate how their furniture will fit!

So, making the main floor look great to buyers is crucial when selling your property. How do you do that?

An effective technique is to walk your main floor the way a buyer would. Start at your front entrance. Stand there for a moment and look around. Get a sense of the impression a buyer is likely to get from that perspective.

I’ve always been attracted to the idea of volunteering.  There is definitely something rewarding about giving up your time, especially when you can see the results.  I can still remember clearly my first volunteer experience when I was 13, at the Misericordia hospital here in Edmonton.  I believe the inspiration came from reading Sweet Valley High novels, and the stories of one of the twins being a Candy Striper at the local hospital.  Or maybe it was Nancy Drew? Whether you're painting your home to prepare it for sale, or simply to make it more attractive for your own enjoyment, choosing the right colour is important. A colour isn't just a matter of taste, it's also, to a large extent, about the emotions it elicits.

If you're painting your foyer, for example, you may want it to seem bright and welcoming. So, light orange tones might be appropriate as that colour is often interpreted as friendly.

What if your Ideal Home Isn't Available?

Imagine you're looking for a new home. You have a list of all the features you want, just like you would have a grocery shopping list. However, when you explore the homes currently on the market, none meets all your criteria.

What do you do? You have a few good options.

First, you can take a second look at your list. Does your new home need every single feature on it? Are there one or two features you can do without? For example, can you settle for a smaller kitchen assuming the property has everything else you want?
